JAKARTA, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia's rice production projection for 2025 has been revised to over 34 million tons, up from the initial estimate of 32 million tons in November last year, creating potential opportunities for exports, an official announced on Thursday.

According to Sam Herodian, special staff to the Minister of Agriculture for agricultural policy, the updated forecast surpasses the country's national rice demand, which is estimated at 31 million tons for the year.

"With improved irrigation systems, enhanced collaboration with the Public Works Ministry, and expanded pumping facilities, production is expected to increase further," said Herodian.

He also attributed the higher output to the use of superior seeds tailored to diverse growing conditions.

Due to the production surge, Herodian expressed optimism that Indonesia's rice stockpile would reach a record high of 4 million tons within the next two weeks, up from the current 3.5 million tons.

Regarding exports, Herodian noted that since production now exceeds domestic demand, the country could consider shipping rice abroad. He also said that rice exports to Malaysia are expected to begin by the end of 2025, as it is one of the first group of countries to request exports from Indonesia.
