SEOUL, July 1 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's top prosecutor has offered to resign about nine months after he took office in September last year, multiple media outlets said Tuesday.

Prosecutor General Shim Woo-jung tendered his resignation on Monday, and his retirement ceremony will be held on Wednesday.

President Lee Jae-myung, who was sworn in as the country's 21st president on June 4, vowed to disperse the power of the prosecution by taking away all of the prosecution's rights to investigate and giving them to the police.

By law, prosecutors are currently allowed to investigate certain grave crimes.
