WASHINGTON, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- The round of 16 lineups at the 2025 US Open were finalized on Saturday, with defending champions Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek advancing smoothly, while third seed Alexander Zverev suffered a surprise exit.
Top seed Sinner rallied from a set down to overcome Denis Shapovalov 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3, extending his hard-court Grand Slam winning streak to 24 matches.
"It was a very, very tough match today," said Sinner. "I knew I would have to play at a high level." The Italian will next face No. 23 seed Alexander Bublik.
Third-seeded Zverev was eliminated by Felix Auger-Aliassime 4-6, 7-6(7), 6-4, 6-4. The Canadian saved a set point in the second-set tiebreak and secured his first Top 5 victory at a major.
"This feels good, this feels good!" Auger-Aliassime exclaimed after the match. He will meet 15th seed Andrey Rublev in the next round.
Wimbledon champion Swiatek fought back from 1-5 down in the first set to defeat Anna Kalinskaya 7-6(2), 6-4.
"I didn't notice that my service percentage was low," Swiatek remarked after the match. The Pole will next face 13th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova, who reached the US Open round of 16 for the first time.
Two-time US Open champion Naomi Osaka edged Daria Kasatkina 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 to set up a clash with Coco Gauff, who dominated Magdalena Frech 6-3, 6-1. Gauff currently leads their head-to-head 3-2.
In doubles, Chinese pairs advanced as Xu Yifan/Yang Zhaoxuan beat Guo Hanyu/Alexandra Panova 6-2, 6-7(3), 6-3, while Wang Yafan/Shuko Aoyama cruised past Viktorija Golubic/Ann Li 6-1, 6-3. Venus Williams, partnering Leylah Fernandez, defeated Ulrikke Eikeri/Eri Hozumi 7-6(1), 6-1 to reach the last 16. ■
