MADRID, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) showed he is the best sprinter in this year's Vuelta a Espana by winning the eighth stage on Saturday.
The Belgian took advantage of an excellent lead-out from his teammates to claim a bunch sprint at the end of the 163-kilometer stage from Monzon Templario to Zaragoza, claiming his second stage win of the race.
The flat stage followed two mountain stages and the Alpecin-Deceuninck team was determined to prevent any breakaways that could jeopardize Philipsen's sprint opportunity.
The breakaway of the day was brought back with 17 kilometers remaining, setting the stage for a sprint finish. Philipsen finished ahead of Ethan Kane (Israel - Premier Tech) to claim his 15th Grand Tour victory - 10 in the Tour de France and five in La Vuelta.
With the main peloton finishing together Torstein Traeen (Bahrain Victorious) maintained the overall leader's red jersey for another day, heading into Sunday's mountain stage to the Valdezcaray ski resort and Monday's rest day. ■
