BERLIN, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Bayern Munich survived a late scare to secure a narrow 3-2 win over Augsburg, maintaining its perfect start to the season despite a nervy second half at the WWK Arena in Saturday's Bundesliga clash.
The record champion appeared in control for much of the match after early dominance, which saw them take a two-goal lead before the break. Serge Gnabry opened the scoring in the 28th minute, heading home from a precise Harry Kane delivery. Just before halftime, Luis Diaz doubled the lead as he latched onto Konrad Laimer's pass and slotted confidently past Finn Dahmen.
Any hopes of an Augsburg fightback appeared to be finished moments after the restart. Michael Olise, who had already troubled the hosts' defense in the opening minutes, cut inside to finish clinically from another Kane assist, extending Bayern's advantage to 3-0.
Yet Augsburg, led by new coach Sandro Wagner in only his second Bundesliga match in charge, refused to surrender. Kristijan Jakic sparked hope with a well-placed volley from Robin Fellhauer's cross in the 53rd minute. The momentum shifted further when substitute Mert Komur scored to make it 3-2 with 14 minutes remaining, setting up a frantic finale.
Encouraged by its supporters, Augsburg pressed forward relentlessly, and Bayern's defensive line looked vulnerable. Olise and Dayot Upamecano both missed golden chances to restore a comfortable margin, while Dahmen made vital saves to keep Augsburg in contention. In stoppage time, Komur's header narrowly missed the target, denying Augsburg a dramatic equalizer.
The closing stages were overshadowed by a worrying collision between Fellhauer and Bayern's Sacha Boey, which left the Augsburg defender stretchered off with a suspected concussion. After a lengthy interruption, the visitor held on to seal three hard-earned points.
With six points from two matches, Bayern sits firmly among the early Bundesliga leaders. Despite the defeat, Augsburg earned praise for its resilience and will hope to carry that fighting spirit into its next fixture against St. Pauli.
Elsewhere in Bundesliga, Eintracht Frankfurt claimed its second win of the campaign with a 3-1 victory over Hoffenheim, 10-man Werder Bremen battled to hold Bayer Leverkusen in a thrilling 3-3 draw. RB Leipzig returned to winning ways by easing past Heidenheim 2-0, while Chema Andres' late strike sealed a narrow 1-0 triumph for Stuttgart over Borussia Monchengladbach. ■
