BERLIN, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- Wolfsburg on Saturday confirmed Daniel Bauer as its head coach on a long-term basis after opting for continuity following a turbulent spell at the Bundesliga club.
The decision was announced by the Wolves shortly before kick-off of its final Bundesliga match of the year against Freiburg.
The 43-year-old, who stepped into the role on November 9 after the dismissal of Paul Simonis, has signed a contract running until June 30, 2027, the club said.
Wolfsburg has taken seven points from its past four league matches under Bauer, a stretch that helped stabilize both results and performances after a difficult start of the season.
"Daniel has taken over the team once again in a difficult phase and has not only stabilized it, but also developed it week by week," said managing director for sport Peter Christiansen in a club statement. He added that Bauer had succeeded in forming "a strong unit" and injecting "new life into the team."
Christiansen said the club had first wanted to reorganize its sporting leadership before reaching "a well-founded decision" on the head coach position.
Sporting director Pirmin Schwegler said the displays "on the pitch, and the results, speak for themselves," adding Wolfsburg was convinced Bauer is the right man to deliver the best possible sporting success "this season and beyond."
Bauer, a Wolfsburg employee since 2016 after joining from Hannover 96, has worked in several academy roles over the past nine years. He has served as an assistant coach of the under-19 and the former under-23 side, and as head coach of the under-17 and, most recently, the under-19.
He also had a short senior interim spell at the end of last season, taking four points from the final two matches. Wolfsburg said Bauer is scheduled to begin the German FA's Pro License course in January 2026 alongside his duties with the first team.
Wolfsburg sits 14th in the standings with 15 points from 15 matches, just four points clear of the relegation zone. ■
