JAKARTA, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Several Indonesian cities have favored sending "delinquent" students and youths to military barracks for training programs aimed at instilling discipline.

The programs were recently proposed by West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi, who instructed regions within the province to collaborate with local military posts to provide a six-month intensive character training program for troubled students and youths.

"Most of these troubled students and youths are still minors and can not yet be prosecuted under criminal law. Discipline coaching by military or police institutions can serve as an educational experience," Tangerang Deputy Regent Intan Nurul Hikmah said.

She added that her administration is currently in discussions with relevant stakeholders to design the coaching curriculum.

"In the future, we will also involve parents in the coaching process. Schools will also be asked to impose appropriate sanctions on students who violate rules," she said.

Singkawang City is preparing a similar program, as Mayor Tjhai Chui Mie announced plans to send youths involved in illegal street racing to local military barracks.
