KABUL, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- The Afghan Ministry of Mines and Petroleum has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kabul Lamar Company for the construction of a cutting-edge lead and zinc processing facility, according to a ministry statement on Thursday.
The pact opens the door to a 100-million-U.S.-dollar investment designed to bolster Afghanistan's mineral processing infrastructure and unlock greater value from its vast untapped reserves, according to the statement.
Spanning three phases, the project will result in a fully operational plant with a daily capacity of up to 5,000 tons of ore, it added.
To promote energy independence, the company will build an integrated thermal power plant on-site and develop a dedicated coal mine to secure fuel supplies. ■
