SYDNEY, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- A man has been charged with attempted murder over the stabbing of a police officer with a sword in southwest Sydney on Friday evening, police said on Saturday.
The police force in Australia's state of New South Wales (NSW) said that the 28-year-old probationary constable was one of the officers deployed to reports of a concern for welfare at a residence in the suburb of Grasmere, about 50 km southwest of central Sydney, at around 5:20 p.m. on Friday.
Officers arrived at the scene and attempted to arrest a 20-year-old man. During the course of the arrest, the 20-year-old allegedly threw a spear at police before stabbing the 28-year-old constable in the leg with a sword.
The constable was treated at the scene by ambulance paramedics and airlifted to hospital in a serious but stable condition.
The 20-year-old was tasered and taken to a nearby police station, where he was subsequently charged with several offenses, including two counts of attempted murder, four counts of wounding a person with intent to resist arrest and wounding a police officer executing their duty.
A crime scene was established at the residence, and a knife, hatchet and spear were seized for forensic examination. ■
