WARSAW, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- The lowest water level on record was observed Monday on the Vistula River at the Warsaw-Bulwary hydrological station, the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) reported.
The reading stood at 9 centimeters at 8:20 a.m. local time, one centimeter below the previous record of 10 centimeters recorded on Aug. 23, according to IMGW.
Water levels below the seasonal minimum have also been reported at 15 other hydrological stations on rivers including the Vistula, the institute added.
Bogdan Chojnicki, professor at Poznan University of Life Sciences, said the likelihood of a new heatwave in September could again trigger drought and low river levels, similar to conditions in September 2024.
The Warsaw Public Transport Authority announced that ferry services on the Vistula have been suspended since Aug. 12 and will remain halted until further notice due to the record low water level.
IMGW spokesperson Agnieszka Prasek said forecasts indicate that the final weekend of the summer holidays will bring high temperatures, and September is expected to be warmer than average, with the possibility of heatwaves in the first days of the month. ■
