THE HAGUE, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Jesse Klaver was chosen as the new leader of the Netherlands' Green Left-Labor alliance (GroenLinks-PvdA) on Monday, succeeding Frans Timmermans, who resigned last week following disappointing election results.

The decision was made by the 20-member Green Left-Labor parliamentary group on Monday morning, Dutch public broadcaster NOS reported. Klaver was the only candidate.

Klaver, 39, previously served as the political leader and parliamentary group leader of the Green Left party (GroenLinks) from May 2015 until the party formally merged its parliamentary faction with the PvdA in October 2023.

On Friday, the ANP election service announced the victory of the Democrats 66 (D66) party in the Dutch parliamentary election. Therefore, D66 leader Rob Jetten will lead efforts to form a new ruling coalition.

The Green Left-Labor alliance won 20 seats, a decrease from the 25 it got in the 2023 election.

Party leaders, including Jesse Klaver, are expected to meet on Tuesday to discuss the formation of a coalition government.
